Welcome to the Mývatnssveit region

This region boasts of some of the most beautiful, unique and varied landscapes in the northern hemisphere, and is one of Iceland’s more popular attractions in both summer and winter. You’ll enter into a magical world, formed by volcanic activity for tens of thousands of years – a world where Nature is still creating. All who pass through are welcome, but locals would like to remind guests to show Nature the respect she’s due and heed the biosphere’s delicate balance.

Vogafjós in Vogar

Vogar has been inhabited almost since the settlement. With multiple farms, the locals operate interesting tours alongside their farming duties. The traditional farm keeps cattle, sheep and fowl. Many gems are within easy reach, and some can even be reached on foot. Grjótárvegur is a lovely option for hikers. The road winds its way between the main road, past Grjótagjá canyon and the Nature Baths (reachable via a side road) and Vogar. Just south off the community is another trail, ideal for hikes, that leads east to Hverfjall. There’s a marked route from the parking lot north of Hverfjall that continues south to Dimmuborgir.

Natural gems in the region

No one should miss Dimmuborgir, Hverfjall, Grjótagjá, Skútustaðagígar, Kálfastrandarland, Leirhnjúkur, Krafla and Hverarönd by Námafjall. Also, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss in glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, is only 50 km (31 mi) from Reykjahlíð.

Vogafjós in wonderful winter

The Mývatnssveit region is a charming winter destination, when nature dons a glittering snow cape and is mystically lit by a star-strewn winter sky, decorated by the captivating northern lights. Vogafjós offers winter package tours from the 1 October to 30 April, which include for en example a Husky tourm an Icecave tour and many more!
