From an idea to foundation

Our history can be traced back to an Agricultural Convention in 1971 when farmers discussed the option of providing services for foreign travelers. The idea was to offer farm stays and activities in the rural area of Iceland such as accommodation, horse riding, angling and many more unique experiences only found in the Icelandic countryside.

In 1980, the Hey Iceland Association was established as more farmers had begun providing services to foreign travelers. The association’s main purpose was to define service values and quality standards with the aim of developing a sustainable tourism industry in rural areas of Iceland.

In 1991 a travel agency, Hey Iceland was formally founded to oversee the growing number of bookings and to promote its members services. Since its foundation, Icelandic Farm Holidays core business has been to offer accommodation and activities in Iceland’s countryside; an idea originated from the convention in 1971.

 
Hey Iceland, travel agency, is still majority owned by farmers or the Hey Iceland Association, which keeps profits local and in rural communities.

Over the years, we have won several awards, including the Icelandic Tourist Board’s Environmental Award in 2004, the President of Iceland’s Export Award in 2011 and The Strongest in Iceland acknowledgement for 2010 - 2015.
