What is the Imagine Peace Tower?
The Imagine Peace Tower is not just a piece of art—it’s a powerful symbol of human hope, representing John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s enduring campaign for world peace. The tower takes the form of a serene wishing well, with the words "IMAGINE PEACE" inscribed in 24 languages along its sides, serving as a constant reminder that peace transcends borders. At night, the tower transforms with a captivating light display. The beams, directed through mirrored pathways, rise to meet Iceland’s ever-changing skies in a truly unique spectacle.
The tower’s environmental sustainability aligns perfectly with its message. The energy powering the lights is supplied by Reykjavik Energy, using geothermal power—an eco-friendly, renewable resource. This project was a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, the Reykjavik Art Museum, and Reykjavik Energy, exemplifying the power of collective action toward a shared vision.
When is it lit?
The tower shines from one hour after sunset until midnight between October 9 and December 8 (the dates marking John Lennon's birth and death). It is also illuminated from the Winter Solstice through New Year's Day, on Yoko Ono’s birthday, and during the Spring Equinox week. The ever-changing weather in Iceland influences the tower’s brightness and intensity, adding a dynamic element to its display.
