Itinerary

Arrival day | Reykjavík

Reykjavík is a beautiful city all year round but gets particularly magical in wintertime, when the town is lit up with Christmas lights that brighten the dark nights. Reykjavík is full of cosy cafés where you can sit in and enjoy some live music, along with great museums, art galleries, and outdoor geothermal pools. Don’t miss the chance to taste the best of Icelandic cuisine at the city’s finest restaurants. The flybus shuttle will transfer you to your accommodation in Reykjavík from Keflavik Airport upon arrival. Optional, and not included in the price, is to pick up the rental car at the airport when you arrive.

Accommodation in Reykjavík (optional and not included in tour price).

Day 1 | Borgarfjörður Area

Time to get out of town and unveil the secrets of Borgarfjörður, a scenic region known as the settings of the most popular Icelandic sagas, and understandably so. The blue shades of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar series of waterfalls are revealed by the snowy surroundings. Soon, you will see the fumaroles and hot steams rising from the grounds: you’ve reached Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Visit the historical site Reykholt, home of Iceland's best-known author Snorri Sturluson from 1206 to 1241.

Accommodation in Snæfellsnes area.

Day 2 | Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Nothing prepares you to the beauty of Snæfellsnes Peninsula in its winter coat, from its glaciers, waterfalls, lava fields, volcanic craters, infinite black sand beaches, tall mountains and dramatic cliffs. Today, explore the peninsula’s glorious landmarks including Snæfellsjökull Glacier, Búðir picturesque black church, Mount Kirkjufell as well as the quaint fishing towns along the coast that make Snæfellsnes a place with a soul. After a relatively easy climb up to the rim of Saxhóll crater, enjoy the widest view over the glacier and all the way out to sea on the other side.

Accommodation in Húnaflói/Skagafjörður area.

Day 3 | The Northwest and Akureyri

Drive around Vatnsnes Peninsula, home to Iceland’s largest colony of seals. Visit the troll-like Hvítserkur stack bathed in the first sunrays of the day, and Borgarvirki, an impressive 10-15 meters high ridge of basalt columnar rocks, the remains of a volcanic plug, and an alleged ancient district fortress and battleground. See some of the country’s best-preserved turf farmhouses in Glaumbær and Víðimýrarkirkja Church, both merging beautifully with nature. Spend the night in Akureyri, where northern lights might make an appearance?

Day 4 | Lake Mývatn Area

Be ready for a series of spectacular natural wonders today, starting with the stunning Goðafoss Waterfall dressed in white and icicles. Reach the region of Lake Mývatn, boasting unique volcanic formations including Dimmuborgir lava field, Skútustaðir lunar pseudo-craters, Krafla volcano and its teal green lake, Hverir Geothermal Area and Grjótagjá lava cave. Make the most of your day by joining an exhilarating dogsledding, horseback riding, or snowmobiling tour. Relax in Mývatn Nature Baths, while admiring the sunset.

Accommodation in Húsavík/Lake Mývatn area for 2 nights.

Day 5 | Northeast Iceland

Make a first stop at Húsavík village, located in splendid mountainous surroundings, rich in museums, colourful wooden houses, and mostly known as Iceland’s whale watching capital. Admire the snowcapped peaks across the bay or see humpback whales in their natural habitat on a whale watching tour (limited in winter). Marvel at the fossil layers of Tjörnes Peninsula coastal cliffs, and explore Öxarfjörður, a broad fjord encircled by mountain ranges, lava fields and black sand deserts. Head further East towards Ásbyrgi Canyon and Dettifoss Waterfall, whose thunder will give you goosebumps.

Day 6 | East Iceland

As you head to Egilsstaðir town, drive across an enchanting winter wonderland featuring abrupt peaks, windblown ridges, and the mystical barren landscapes of Möðrudalsöræfi. On a lucky day, your drive may become even more exciting with the spotting of wild reindeers, regular visitors of lowlands in winter as they search of food. Walk up to Litlanesfoss Waterfall and further on to Hengifoss Waterfall, whose red layers testify of past eruptions in the area. Alternative stops include Hallormsstaður National Forest and Skriðuklaustur Centre of Culture and History.

Accommodation in the Egilsstaðir area.

Day 7 | The Eastfjords

Be carried away by the mystical scenery of the Eastfjords, from mountain passes to seaside roads. Discover the quaint little towns along the way, including Seyðisfjörður and its charming colourful houses and church, or Fáskrúðsfjörður that used to be the main hub for French fishermen off East Iceland. Get your dose of epicness at Djúpivogur, a picturesque little fishing village nestled at the foot of Búlandstindur Mountain, before ending the day on a high note in Höfn, home to the photogenic Vestrahorn and best lobster soup!

Accommodation in Höfn area.

Day 8 | Vatnajökull National Park

Explore the wonders of Vatnajökull National Park, starting with the otherworldly Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs can be seen breaking from the glacier to slowly drift into the lagoon and eventually find their way out to sea. Marvel at the beauty of Diamond Beach, where stranded icebergs and winter lights make for the most memorable moment. Reach Skaftafell National Park for endless outdoor opportunities for everyone, from hiking trails to Svartifoss Waterfall and Glacier Lagoon, to ice caving and glacier walks (not included).

Accommodation in Vík/Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Day 9 | South Iceland

Explore the South Coast in all its winter glory, starting at Reynisfjara and its gigantic basalt stacks out at sea, and its neighboir Dyrhólaey, offering 360° views over the glacier, snow-capped mountains and long stretches of black sand beach... all to the sound of the roaring waves. Soak up the atmosphere in Vík, before heading back West, for two last stops at the astounding waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, the only one of its kind where you can walk behind the falls.

Accommodation in Gullfoss/Geysir area.

Day 10 | Gullfoss & Geysir

Today is for the must-sees, and not the least as you follow the Golden Circle Route, gathering three of Iceland’s most iconic sites. Walk along the fissure between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park, and dive into the world’s clearest waters on a thrilling snorkeling trip in Silfra. Visit Gullfoss Waterfall and Strokkur geothermal, whose spectacular active geyser is a sight to behold. Other points of interest nearby include Kerið Volcanic Crater, Fridheimar Tomato Greenhouse, or Laugarvatnshellir Cave. For the most adventuresome, snowmobile tours and ATV tours are also available within easy reach (not included).

TripAdvisor reviews

Fantastic Trip - Highly Recommend My family and I did the 10 day vacation with Hey Iceland, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The entire trip was incredibly well-planned and convenient, and all the lodgings were comfortable and fun. Hey Iceland booked us a shuttle from the airport when we arrived and took care of the rental car and all the lodgings during the rest of our stay. The morning that our trip began, someone arrived promptly from the rental car agency to pick us up and get us started. The tablet that they provide with a suggested itinerary was very helpful for directions and as a framework for us to base our trip around, but we still had the flexibility to add or remove destinations. Our vacation wouldn't have been as fantastic or easy without their involvement.
