Head towards Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir Hot Spring area, with its star attraction, Strokkur Geyser. Hit the South Coast, stopping at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, two outstanding waterfalls enhanced by the winter lights. Just off the Ring Road, visit the precious cultural heritage collection of Skógar Folk Museum and the Lava Centre in Hvolsvöllur. Enjoy a scenic drive along the Southern shore, and soak in panoramic views from Dyrhólaey Promontory and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach.

Day 3 | Vatnajökull National Park

Continue East into Skaftafell Nature Resort and take advantage of the rich outdoor opportunities it boasts, from mind-blowing glacier tours on Vatnajökull Glacier (must be booked in advance) and ice cave experiences (must be booked in advance) in the area, to hiking trails leading to glacier tongues and Svartifoss Waterfall. The basalt columns and icicles hanging from them make for an otherworldly wintry scene. Day 4 | The Eastfjords

Expect a scenic drive today on your way to the Eastfjords, made of abrupt mountains and downside waterfalls from all sides. Be swept away by the undeniable charm of the picturesque fishing towns of Djúpivogur, Breiðdalsvík and Fáskrúðsfjörður, nestled in fjords steeped in tradition and bustling with activity. Reach Egilsstaðir, overlooking Lagarfljót River, made famous by the alleged sea serpent 'Lagarfljótsormur' that took up residence in it. Time to experience some local traditional cuisine, by sampling delicious Icelandic food at one of our country hotels.

Accommodation in the Egilsstaðir area.

Day 5 | Húsavík or Lake Mývatn

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime experience of whale watching out at sea from the charming harbour town of Húsavík (limited in winter), and explore the region’s canyons, waterfalls and mystical rock formations created entirely by volcanism and glacial interaction, within the Northern part of Vatnajökull National Park. Alternatively, make the most of Lake Mývatn’s winter wonderland, featuring geothermal areas, craters, lava caves, and end the day under the snowflakes at Mývatn Nature Baths (not included).

Day 6 | Akureyri and the North

On your way to Akureyri, the Capital of the North, visit the breathtaking arena-like waterfall, Goðafoss, literally the Waterfall of the Gods. Enjoy the charm of Akureyri, whose cosy cafés and artsy corners make it a friendly welcoming city. Head towards Skagafjörður, the cradle of the Icelandic horse, your chance for a horseback riding tour in spectacular surroundings, or a simple introduction to horse breeding. Visit the unique and remarkably-preserved turf farmhouses at Glaumbær and the quaint turf church at Víðimýri. Stop at the Vatnsdalshólar cluster of hills, a wonderful sight in winter, or learn all about the seals at Hvammstangi’s Seal Centre.

Day 7 | The West, Reykjavík

Today spend time in the beautiful Borgarfjörður district, whose every single corner is tied to a surfeit of sagas, including Egil’s Saga. Make your way up the 3000-year-old Grábrók Crater, before heading to Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, two waterfalls of different set up but equal beauty. Make a stop at Europe’s most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver, followed by a visit of the historic Reykholt. Once back in Reykjavík, you might want to take a dip in a geothermal swimming pool and dine out at one of the city’s acclaimed restaurants. Enjoy the street’s ultimate Christmas feeling to the sound of live music!

Push the door of one of the city’s countless cosy cafés, each having a different theme but all special in their own way. End your holiday on a high note with a relaxing soak in the legendary Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa (must be booked in advance), a true haven of peace at the heart of a lava field.

TripAdvisor reviews

Good Service and great itinerary for Ring Road self- drive. Would highly recommend. They were responsive even when I had a question during the tour. The guest houses in the country side and the guest house in Reykjavik were superior and there were no issues with finding our way using the tablet provided. A plus was getting a great car (maybe this was just luck?) a Suzuki 4WD All Grip which did great on the roads. I have never used an agency before, but would do it again without hesitation. Thank you, Hey Iceland!
