Northern Lights at your doorstep!

The Icelandic countryside is the perfect location to watch the northern lights dance in the sky. The hotel is exposed to a low amount of light pollution so as soon as the sky is clear and the northern lights appear, you will get an enhanced experience of the phenomenon. Hotel Borealis is Northern Lights Friendly and offers a wake-up call during the night in case of sightings. You can also ask the staff about the chances of the lights appearing and savour a nice cup of hot chocolate while waiting for the magical display. You are also welcome to enjoy the show from the warm waters of the open-air hot tub, until midnight.

Hikes and outdoor fun

You won’t have to drive far to enjoy various outdoor activities and hikes through the glacier region’s foothills. The hikes are varied, both in difficulty and duration. The boundary of the national park is only 6 km (3.7 mi) from the farm, along which there are marked hiking trails and information signs. Among the more popular outdoor areas are Haukafell (11 km / 6.8 mi) and Fláajökull (8 km / 5 mi). Hiking maps for these areas and other popular ones are sold at the guesthouse. It is easy to walk down to the shore from the farm.

Glacial adventures and the scent of the bushes

The organised day-tours to Vatnajökull, done in either super-jeeps or snowmobiles, depart 16 km (10 mi) away. There is an interesting glacier exhibition in the town Höfn, in the same house as the tourist information centre. The nearest region north of Hornafjörður is called Lón and is about 50 km (31 mi) away. Lón is a charming region for hikers and nature lovers, whether you seek ocean views, bushy hills or colourful mountains. The Ring Road passes through Lón.
