Ever wanted to know what a volcano looks like on the inside? This unique volcano tour takes you literally inside a dormant volcano, through the top crater and to the bottom of its magma chamber, once filled with steaming hot lava. Þríhnúkagígur Volcano is the only place on earth where it is safe to explore a magma chamber on the inside. The volcano has not erupted for 4,000 years and shows no signs of coming to life again anytime soon. Hence, you are safe! Daily from 15 May to 10 September.

The volcano is located only about 25 minutes' driving distance from Reykjavík, near the Bláfjöll mountain range and skiing area.

However, a 2.5 km hike over a lava field is required to reach the crater.The walk is moderate (level 2-3 difficulty out of 5 possible) and takes about 45 - 50 minutes.

Please bring with you 

  • Good walking/hiking shoes - you need to hike about 2.5 km each way
  • Warm clothes - the weather may be a lot different than in Reykjavík
  • No sneakers and no jeans!
