Hidden history in South Iceland

Hotel VOS is very close to the sea (3 km / 1.86 mi), where the heavy waves of the Atlantic ocean crash onto the shores of Gljáin black sand beach. Guided tours are available, and you can even go sea-fishing. Ytri-Rangá / Hólsá is one of the greatest salmon fishing rivers in the country, and along it you can also find Ægisíðufoss waterfall (13 km / 8 mi). Djúpósstífla (7.4 km / 4.6 mi) is a dam where the rivers Ytri-Rangá, Þverá and Hólsá meet. Þykkvibær was kind of an island before the dam was made, and its creation in 1922 greatly changed the living conditions in the area.

Natural treasures and the trails of Njál’s Saga

Hotel VOS is centrally located in South Iceland, with many sightseeing possibilities in an area that is home to many of Iceland’s best-known natural attractions. Scheduled tours to Þórsmörk run daily from Hella (17 km / 10.5 mi). To the east, the historical trails of Njál’s Saga lead to the charming and beautiful countryside under Eyjafjallajökull glacier. In the village at Hvolsvöllur (27 km / 17 mi) is the Icelandic Saga Centre (Sögusetrið) where you can learn about the world of Icelandic Sagas and Norse mythology. It is 54 km / 34 mi to the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and from there it is 27 km / 17 mi to another famous waterfall, Skógafoss, located in the countryside at the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull. Right by the waterfall is the unique Skógar district museum.

Þingvellir, Gullfoss og Geysir, Vestmannaeyjar

From Hotel VOS, you can take a day trip to the Golden Circle, which includes Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterall (100 km / 60 mi). In Þjórsárdalur (80 km / 50 mi) at the foothills of Hekla, you can find lovely hiking trails and see the reconstruction of the Saga age farm at Stöng (90 km / 56 mi). From Landeyjahöfn (57 km / 35 mi) you can take a 35-minute ferry ride to Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands), a group of islands off the south coast. There you can visit the Eldheimar, an exhibition focused on the 1973 Heimaey volcanic eruption.
